Background

Ohahase Education Centre was established in 1999 as a conduit between Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and Quinte Adult Education for adults who wished to work towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. In 2003, it became recognized as a Band-controlled school, funded by the Department of Indian Affairs, as it was known at the time. At the time, Ohahase offered classes in Grades 9 and 10. In 2014, Ohahase began offering classes up to Grade 12, as well as a Co-operative Education program.

Ohahase operates under three philosophies: to be a center for excellence, providing holistic and respectful learning rooted in Haudenosaunee language and cultural practices; to facilitate a multigeneration community that fosters belonging through encouragement, motivation, and laughter; and to strive for the goals of self-sufficiency and biculturalism.

Overview

Location

Ohahase Education Centre is located in the former “Orange Lodge” at 1825 York Road in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.

Ohahase Education Centre is a Ministry of Education-inspected secondary school, and offers a wide range of both compulsory and optional courses from Grades 9 – 12.
Learners can enroll in up to four courses in each of two semesters over the academic year. Smaller class sizes, a culturally-appropriate learning environment, personalized
support, and dedicated staff make the Ohahase Education Centre an excellent choice for learners who wish to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) right
here in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. Anyone who has completed Grade 8 may enroll, and there are no upper age restrictions.

Ohahase Education Centre also offers an Adult Education/Self-Study program for those who prefer to study independently and at their own pace. This can be an ideal
option for those who are not able to attend daily classes, but who wish to earn the credits they need to obtain their OSSD, or who need specific credits for a post-secondary
program. Ohahase provides all necessary supplies and materials, and staff are available daily to provide tutoring support, exam preparation, and evaluations.
