Background

Ohahase Education Centre was established in 1999 as a conduit between Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and Quinte Adult Education for adults who wished to work towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. In 2003, it became recognized as a band-controlled school, funded by the Department of Indian Affairs, as it was known at the time. At the time, Ohahase offered classes in Grades 9 and 10. In 2014, Ohahase began offering classes up to Grade 12, as well as a Co-operative Education Program.

Ohahase operates under three philosophies: to be a center for excellence, providing holistic and respectful learning rooted in Haudenosaunee language and cultural practices; to facilitate a multi-generation community that fosters belonging through encouragement, motivation, and laughter; and to strive for the goals of self-sufficiency and biculturalism.
